it seems to come up in conversation time and time again with x or inactive dubs my hubby and i talk to.
we often discuss with them the reasons we left the borg, the things that that have really hurt us and the wrong teachings.

I felt like being a dub was part of the reason I was a good person, but I don't think it was the only reason. I didn't study with them until I was 22. Before that, I never was a trouble maker, and I always tried to help people out. I thought I was a decent person. I had that with me even when the dubs were working me over with their garbage.

As far as the website you posted about, you should know that only a fool would make any judgements based on a website alone. Most websites are rubbish and not worth the banwidth they use. Do you have any sources you can cite REAL SOURCES?
Exactly. Plus we learned from the WTS that it is very easy to use card stacking techniques to make something look like absolute truth. How do we know that wasn't done on the website? Remember, at one time we all thought the WTS were giving us reliable, black and white information, but now we know that's not the case. With that in mind, I'm not sure I can trust anything that claims it can prove something is right or wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt. That sends up a red flag that they are using card stacking, or are distorting something in some way.

it started as a religious periodical in the 1870s, and somehow progressed to being a faith, a religion, and then from there progressed to become a cult.
when did this happen, and how?

I concur. I think a group becomes a cult when it goes from worshipping a diety to worshipping a person or a group of people.

And the sources at this site are to be trusted because.....? How do I know this site isn't just somebody's opinion? And I'm supposed to take the word of a few people to wipe out every other belief out there? Wait a second, don't we know another organization like that? Hmmmm.....
And do most people really take tarot-cards seriously? I thought it was mostly for fun. I know for most advertisements for readings, there is some fine print that says something to the effect of "This is merely for fun and not to be taken literally."

I don't know if I would call the JWs a cult or not. Part of the definition of a cult includes it being a fad, sort of like Heaven's Gate, which didn't last that long in comparison to other religious groups.
The JWs are probably going to be around for a long time. They certainly exude some cultish tendencies, such as strict control, ostracising people from society, and claiming they have a monopoly on the truth. However, like everyone said, the word "cult" is thrown around loosely these days and the meaning is very subjective.

I guess it would depend on your definition of just plain stupid. I would have to say yes, to an extent. But I blame a lot of that on the fact we live in such a fast paced, highly competitive society, that people are on the go so much that they don't stop and think about things. I think that's why you see so much stupidity anymore; nobody takes the 2 seconds out of their lazer speed life to use some common sense when needed. But that's just my theory.
Anyway Brad, I think you're a bit harsh on a lot of these groups, While I agree some of them get annoying, you can't lump everybody in those groups as stupid. A lot of them don't necessarily agree with every minute detail held by the group as a whole. There are always outliers.
